Gulammohammed Sheikh, b. 1937 in Surendranagar, Gujarat. Lives and works in Baroda. Gulammohammed Sheikh studied painting at MS University, Baroda and the Royal College of Art, London. In addition to his visual art practice, he has also published widely-read volumes of poetry as well as works of art history and criticism. Sheikh is also a respected figure in art education, having taught at the Faculty of Arts in Baroda for nearly three decades. His works have been exhibited in biennials and art shows all over the world, including in cities like Bombay, Tokyo, Paris, New Delhi, London, Brussels, and Chicago. In this interview, Gulammohammed Sheikh opens up about his ideas and thinking about his work at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014. He is fascinated with Kochi's history, as well as its built and natural environments, and thinks his art will be response to the place. Sheikh goes on to speak about the artistic exploration of the idea of the multiple - the multiple situations in which we act, the several levels of our belonging, the plural temporality that we inhabit.
