Description

Lemony Snicket's acceptance "speech" for the Charlotte Zolotow award at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, April 12th, 2014. Song begins about 30 seconds into the video. Background: Lemony Snicket: "My wife said to me, 'Isn't the Caldecott award the one that's the big deal?' To which I replied that I'd never heard of the Caldecott, and that I'd also never heard of her, and could she please immediately get out of the house of the 2014 Charlotte Zolotow Award winner." That's basically when the video starts and why he refers to his wife as 'estranged.' He is hilarious! I own this video. Lemony Snicket owns the song. Lyrics: Pictures don't matter in a picture book Just open up the covers and take a little look The pictures are pretty but to learn what happens next You'll have to move your eyes from the image to the text. It's the words, it's the words. Whether there are few of them or whether there are herds The words are more important, I can prove and tell you how If you don't believe me go ask Charlotte Zolotow! Now illustrators are all well and good But without authors, well there goes the neighborhood It's "I liked what I read" not "I liked what I saw" The folks who run the world aren't the folks who sit and draw! It's the words, it's the words. If it doesn't have the alphabet, it's really for the birds. The words are more important, every author take a bow And if you don't believe go ask Charlotte Zolotow! Now shout your favorite word (audience participation time!), doesn't even have to rhyme. Now paint your favorite picture, well I'm afraid there isn't time Powerful, amazing, alluring, and precise Illustrations on the other hand are only sort of nice. It's the words, it's the words. Let this be the anthem of the literary verse. The words are more important, of this I'll never disavow And if you don't believe me go ask Charlotte Zolotow! It's the words, it's the words. You could disagree with me but that would be absurds. The words are more important, that's the thing I just said now And if you don't believe me, Why wouldn't you believe me, Or even disperceive me, Which would totally bereave me, And eventually aggrieve me, Which is a very much pet-peeve me, Because I'm not very naïvey, Even on a New Years Evy, In downtown Tel Avivy, Where my parents did conceive me, Go ask Charlotte Zolotow!
