Description

A request from a new subscriber from Russia, Tatiana, (Tsmirna), has introduced me to this rather sad song. It was written by H S Thompson in 1852 and tells of a young woman felled by disease, possibly tuberculosis. James Joyce used the lyrics slightly altered in his novel, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" and Bob Willis a country singer recorded an arrangement of the song which itself was later covered by Dolly Parton as "Billy Dale". I tried it with a guitar accompaniment, but felt it better suited the autoharp, so here is my interpretation of this song. The chords shown in the annotations can be used for guitar or other instruments as well.
