Duo smash record running the 10 highest mountains in the UK in a day

It is thought they are the first to complete "the Big 10" within 24 hours. A total of 9 hours 10 was spent running, with the remainder driving between the mountain ranges. Setting off at 0420 on 19th July, their first mountain was Ben Lawers, followed by a drive to the Nevis Range where they completed Aonach Mor, Aonach Beag, Carn Mor Dearg and then the UK's tallest mountain Ben Nevis. After Ben Nevis they drove to the Cairngorms, where they traversed Cairngorm, Ben McDhui, Braeriach, Angel's Peak before finishing on CairnToul at 1730. Dr. Murray, 34 is a GP based in Edinburgh. His previous achievements include completing a remarkable 2,559 mile run from Scotland to the Sahara Desert, a 7hr run up Mt Kilimanjaro last year and winning both the North Pole marathon and the Ice marathon (in the South Pole). He also works with some of Scotland's best athletes as part of the sports medicine team at the sport Scotland institute of sport. Donnie Campbell, 29 is a running coach, and a former Marine Commando based in Edinburgh who has previously ran from Glasgow to his former home of Skye without stopping to sleep. The 184-mile (296km) journey was equivalent of about seven marathons and took him 44 hours and 30 minutes. Campbell took up ultra running six years ago. The Big 10 has it all in terms of spectacular ridgelines, some wildlife and highly variable weather. They had fog, wind, rain, and even a odd glimpse of sunshine. The toughest part of the day was dealing with the wind, rain and low visibility in the Cairngorms. They are hoping that other runners will take on The Big 10 challenge will become similar to the 3 peaks challenge. Aside from setting a record the duo are hoping to draw attention to the benefits of getting regular exercise in the great outdoors.
