Description

The Spectrum changed my life. The student newspaper changed everything. It gave me career opportunities. It gave me lifelong friends. I couldn't be more thankful to have had the opportunity to work there. Over my two years as editor in chief, I was given an in-depth look at the finances of The Spectrum. I could never understand it: how it is one of the only student newspapers in the country that receives no funding from the school, student government or any other outside entity. There had to be a way to remedy that. I tried everything: lobbied to the university, pitched to the Student Association Senate, met with SA officials, sought legal counsel, looked into holding our own election. Nothing worked. Because of 2007 SUNY litigation, The Spectrum cannot appear on the student-wide referendum, and the SA has no obligation to give the newspaper money -- and the paper has no grounds to legally appeal its decision -- because of the wording of a contract SA and The Spectrum signed years ago. Essentially, self-sufficiency is this newspaper's only hope. I don't want you to think it's dying, because it isn't. The Spectrum is OK -- for now. Who knows what could happen down the road? At one point, in 2011, we were $70,000 in debt. It took two miracles to rescue us. If that happens again (which it very well could), I'm not sure the paper will be able to recover. So here's what I'm proposing: an alumni push. In my two years as EIC, one alum donated. I imagine that's either because people don't think of it or don't think they could make a sizable contribution. I can't rescue this paper on my own either. Many of us are young, just starting out in our careers and don't have a ton of money to spare. No matter. Let's give what we can. If this is a publication that helped you out personally or professionally, or if it's a cause you believe in, let's give back by showing our support. Let's help out next year's staff. Let's give the future University at Buffalo students the same revolutionary opportunity we had. Want to give? Visit http://www.youcaring.com/other/sustaining-the-spectrum/181968#sthash.eQ8kOpJG.dpuf
