Description

"This Land Is Your Land" - the classic folk anthem written by Woodie Guthrie - was the first single release by The New Christy Minstrels, taken from their first LP. At the time the album (and this single) was recorded, it was done with the very first line-up of Christy members - half of which withdrew when the group's new managers booked them to be regulars on "The Andy Williams Show" (those members were not interested in giving up their folk appearances at coffee houses and other venues for - what was then envisioned by many of them to be a career on TV). The group's founder - Randy Sparks - then recruited some new members, and re-formed the group which now included mainstays Barry McGuire, Barry Kane, Gayle Caldwell, Jackie Miller (Randy's ex-wife), Art Podell, Dolan Ellis, Larry Ramos, Nick Woods and Clarence Treat. The photo above shows the group receiving a Grammy Award in 1962 for "Best Performance by a Folk Chorus", a category invented just for them in recognition of their first album "Presenting The New Christy Minstrels" (Columbia CL 1872/CS 8672). Under the early direction of Randy Sparks, the Christies pretty much focused exclusively on folk music, until Randy's departure in September 1964. Produced by Jim Harbert. Directed by Randy Sparks.
