Description

Plot: A magician/alchemist, seeking to create life, finds that he needs the "blood of a virgin" to continue his experiments. He sends out his dwarf assistant to pick out the right girl. This film was adapted by Rex Ingram from the novel "The Magician" wrtten by W. Somerset Maugham. It stars Alice Terry, Paul Wegener and Iván Petrovich. It has been written that Maugham did not care much for Ingram's adaptation of his 1908 novel, which is a biting fictionalized work inspired by the real life occultist Aleister Crowley (who was 33 years old when Maugham's opus was written). Alice Terry (wife of writer/producer/director Rex Ingram) did not appreciate the film. And, if we need to put a final nail in the coffin, some critics of the day dismissed the film as "tasteless." Rex Ingram production; distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Distributing Corporation. / Produced by Rex Ingram. Scenario by Rex Ingram, from the short story "The Magician" by W. Somerset Maugham. Cinematography by John F. Seitz. / Standard 35mm spherical 1.37:1 format.
