Description

Pressure is mounting against a for-profit immigrant detention center in Joliet as 4,000 petitions were submitted to the Joliet City Council Thursday, just one day after four of Illinois' congressional delegates submitted a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, asking her to reject the prison's proposal. Community stakeholders, members of the Will County Board and Joliet City Council member, Jim McFarland, gathered at the Will County Clerk's office, at 302 North Chicago St., for a press conference announcing the submission of the petitions to the Joliet City Council. They also broadcasted the support of local, state and national elected officials, including the signers of Wednesday's letter to Napolitano, U.S. Reps. Bill Foster (D, IL-11), Tammy Duckworth (D, IL-8), Brad Schneider (D, IL-10) and Mike Quigley (D, IL-5).
