Description

George Rochberg (1918-2005): Waltz Serenade for Orchestra Rochberg rejected his early use of serialism in favor of a return to tonality in his music after the death of his son. He answered the critics by clarifying that serialism lacked the depth and capability of expressing his grief and fury. The piece performed here was composed prior to that change. The "Waltz Serenade for Orchestra" (1957.) It was a transcription of the "Waltzes for String Orchestra" (1957,) and later was reworked and used as the second movement (Serenade-Scherzo) of his Symphony No. 4 for Large Orchestra (1976.) It was premiered at Cincinnati's Music Hall with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Thor Johnson, conducting, in 1958.
