Description

LG and Samsung are leading the smartphone market in the area of flexible and curved displays, but Apple may be joining the fray in the next few years. According to Patently Apple, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple a patent for flexible and curved display design. The patent describes Apple's invention as "an advanced glass wraparound display" enclosed within a transparent housing where content can be viewed at any portion of the housing. In the patent, Apple submitted an image of the wraparound display where there is more available screen estate for displaying icons, photos and videos. The flexible display is said to be offer more viewing area without increasing the size or shape of the device. This isn't the first time Apple is said to be exploring the idea of a flexible display. Earlier in June, Business Korea reported that major display manufacturers in the country were pitching to Apple to adopt flexible OLED display panels for the iPhone. Its source claimed that the first iPhone with a flexible display could arrive in 2018.
