"The ongoing scandal demonstrates the rotten heart at Murdoch's News international," said Michelle Stanistreet, general secretary of the National Union of Journalists, who will speak on Tuesday evening. "It is time to take an axe to the lax media ownership laws and repressive trade union legislation that has enabled one man and his scions to dominate our media and political landscape for so many decades." Tony Burke, assistant general secretary of Unite, the union, said: "Finally, 42 years after Rupert Murdoch bought the News of the World, the full scale of his malign and corrosive influence on journalism and trade unions in particular, and British public life in general, has been exposed in the raw." Jonnie Marbles, the comedian and activist who "foam pied" Murdoch, said: "Murdoch won't be held to account by our police, press or parliament. Justice must come from outside the system he pays for." "Murdoch's papers were at it again this weekend - blaming Muslims for the massacre in Norway, not the extreme right," said David Crouch, a journalist at the Financial Times and chair of Tuesday's event. "Absent from the current debate over the phone hacking scandal is a recognition of how Murdoch colluded with successive governments to undermine workplace democracy, roll back the welfare state, champion military intervention overseas, crush protest on the streets, and foment racial prejudice."
