Description

In March 2015, veterinarians in the Chicago area noticed a sharp increase in the number of dogs coming into their clinics with respiratory illness. The disease was first thought to be kennel cough. Subsequent testing, sponsored by the Merck Animal Health Diagnostic Support Program and carried out with the assistance of the New York State Animal Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell University and the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, linked the outbreak to a virus closely related to the Asian strain of Canine Influenza Virus – CIV H3N2, which had never been diagnosed in the United States.
