Description

EMERALD AWARDS RECIPIENT – Public Education & Outreach Category: The Classroom Energy Diet Challenge is an educational program designed to increase energy awareness while improving energy literacy of Canadian students from K–12. Created by Canadian Geographic Education and sponsored by Shell Canada, it’s comprised of 25 energy-themed classroom activities that teach students about biodiversity, transportation, carbon footprints and more. Students and teachers actively address energy issues while working within their communities to learn how current renewable energy resources play a role in Canada’s future. Students are encouraged to share their learnings through community-designed challenges, such as creating public service announcements and environmental initiatives to clean up their communities. Since it’s inception in 2011, 695 classrooms in Alberta have participated in the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge, almost 700 environmental challenges have been completed and 18,500 students have participated in Alberta alone.
