The Armenian Relief Society (ARS) of Western USA is gearing up to celebrate its 30th Anniversary with weekend-long events to be held on May 2-4, 2014. Established as a separate entity in 1984, the ARS of Western USA continues to provide assistance to individuals and communities most in need both locally and internationally. From local programs aimed at offering social services, counseling, and educational programs, to its international objectives focused on humanitarian work in Armenia, Artsakh, Javakhk, and Syria, the ARS of Western USA invites community members to join in celebration and bring their participation to the following events: Gala 2014 - Taglyan Cultural Complex in Los Angeles, Calif. will be the venue for this year's gala, which will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 with cocktails at 7 p.m. and dinner served at 8 p.m. The Gala will not only highlight the region's decades of service but will honor individuals in the following three categories: the first Regional Executive Board (1984-1985 term); Mr. & Mrs. Hacob and Mina Shirvanian, long-time donors; and Kahren Beniasians, for his steadfast moral and financial support of the organization. Entertainment will be provided by the Glendale Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Michael Avedissian. Tickets are $125 per person. ARS: Empowering Generations Seminar -- On Saturday, May 3, 2014, a seminar titled "ARS: Empowering Generations" will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glendale Hilton Hotel. The lineup of speakers will offer their expertise and personal reflections related to the theme of empowerment. Session 1: Armenianism in a Changing World: Cultural Burden or National Identity Moderator: Ara Khachatourian, Asbarez English Editor Speakers: Alice Petrossian, Empowering Women Through Service; Roxanne Makasdjian, Armenian Genocide Education in the Public Education System; Vache Thomassian, Repatriation and the Generation of 'Fools' Main Speakers The seminar's main speakers include Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, Nowhere to Now: In Search of My Armenian Voice; and Dr. Chris Sassouni, Rediscovering My Roots and the Life of My Grandmother Leola Sassouni. Session 2: Beating the Odds and Marching Forward: Personal Journeys of Survival Moderator: Nora Chitilian-Keleshian, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Speakers: Cynthia Keyllian, Battle Scars and the Founding of Beads for Battle; Sona Donoyan-Arabian, A Journey Through Challenges, Illness, and Recovery to Discovery; Dr. Haygoush Kalinian, Conquering Medical Challenges and Becoming a Brain Doctor Seminar attendance is free.
