Description

I'm George Chidi, a former AJC reporter and current contributor to The Guardian and the Peach Pundit political blog. Tom Owens, a candidate for the DeKalb County Commission, obtained a temporary protective order from a DeKalb County magistrate judge on October 6, 2014, claiming that I had made threatening remarks and actions toward him. The order emerged just moments after I published an unflattering profile of him. The order barred me from approaching Owens within 100 yards, and of contacting him in person, on the phone or electronically. I wrote about the absurd order on Facebook and my personal blog. The next day, Owens made a legal motion arguing that I had violated the order by posting in social media. Two words: Streisand Effect. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2014/10/09/georgia-county-commission-candidate-gets-restraining-order-against-journalist-and-city-councilman/ http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2014/10/09/georgia-county-commission-candidate-gets-restraining-order-against-journalist-and-city-councilman/ http://www.myajc.com/news/news/local-govt-politics/and-you-thought-dekalb-politics-couldnt-get-any-cr/nhfzZ/#8bad1097.3715759.735516 In a hearing on an emergency motion to dissolve the TPO on October 15, Owens presented this video as evidence that he had been physically and verbally threatened. Owens claimed that I had never identified myself as a journalist, said "I will destroy you," in our first encounter and that I had even leaned in at one point to whisper "I will kill you, and I'll enjoy doing it." Amazingly, this is the actual video Owens presented in court. I've done no editing to it, though it's clear that it has been edited by Owens' staff. And it plainly contradicts everything he said. The fellow in my face near the end is Joe Newton, a noted anti-immigration activist with a lengthy record of abusing people like this in public.
