Description

From chilly adventures in the snow to snuggly times by the fire, winter can bring memorable moments for you and your furry friend. However, circumstances unique to this time of year can cause your pet harm. Here are 5 top hazards to look out for. 1. Cold Weather - For nippy winter walks protect your dog with footies and a coat or sweater. After an outing check for ice balls between your dog's toes, and keep the fur between his or her foot pads trimmed. If frostbite occurs, do not rub the area, instead apply a warm moist cloth and call your veterinarian. And never leave your pet in a car in extreme temperatures. 2. Increased Joint Pain - Senior dogs and cats have a harder time in winter due to the effects of cold weather on their delicate joints. Consider a heated or orthopedic bed to keep your pal more comfortable. Ramps are helpful to get older pets in and out of vehicles, and stairs give them the ability to climb onto a bed or couch with greater ease. 3. Fireplaces - Fireplaces are a welcome escape from the chilly outdoors, but can be hazards for older and younger pets. Use fireplace screens and hearth gates to help keep a curious cat or dog from getting too close to the heat. 4. Chemicals - De-icing salts used to melt ice and snow can be poisonous if ingested. Use pet-safe ice melts instead. To be safe, wipe off your pet's feet and stomach when they come inside. Keep anti-freeze and other chemicals on a shelf in the garage out of their reach. 5. Travel - If you plan to fly with your pet, rules vary from airline to airline, so contact them in advance to discuss proper pet care or other requirements. Remember to pack a food dish, blankets, and soothing toys to ease travel anxiety. And be sure your pet has proper identification. Something extraordinary happens when pets and people connect.
