Description

The holidays are an exciting and busy time for families, but festive traditions can lead to accidents or illness for your pet. Prepare a safe environment for your dog or cat by keeping these top 10 holiday hazards in mind! 1. Artificial and Live Trees - Ideally your tree should be in an area your pet cannot access. If that's not possible, secure your tree from falling over, vacuum pine needles so your pet doesn't ingest them, and cover your water base securely. 2. Decorations - Keep glass ornaments, tinsel and other decorations high up out of reach of your pet. Cover or tape down electrical cords to keep your pet from chewing them. 3. Wrapped Presents - Always supervise your pet around presents. Ribbons and bows can cause intestinal obstructions if ingested. 4. Live Plants - Hollies, poinsettias, and lilies can be poisonous if ingested. Place them in areas your pet can't reach. 5. Candles and Potpourri - The same for lit candles and potpourri; keep it out of the reach of your pet. 6. Visitors - Hosting guests and holiday parties can increase the activities and noise levels in your home. If your pet is nervous around strangers, create a quiet space with their bed, food and water, and some toys. 7. Medications - Be aware of any house guests that take medication, and keep all containers out of reach. Accidental ingestion is the number one reason pet parents call poison control during the holidays. 8. Alcohol - Liquor can depress your pet's nervous system, and induce vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and seizures. 9. Fatty Meat Trimmings - The methods that humans use to prepare ham, meat, and venison can cause upset stomachs in pets. 10. Appropriate toys - To cut down on pets chewing on things they shouldn't, provide them with a brand new, engaging toy. From chew toys to squeaky noisemakers, to calming toys, and catnip ones, there's something for every pet at Petco. Something extraordinary happens when pets and people connect.
