Description

UPDATE: A special Union Pacific passenger train collided with the back end of a cattle trailer Thursday morning near Maxwell. Union Pacific Spokesman, Aaron Hunt, was on the Omaha-bound train around 9 a.m. when it struck the rear quarter of the trailer at the Pawnee Springs Road Crossing, just west of Maxwell. The passengers and crew of about 32 people, comprised U-P staff and executives, and the truck driver, were not hurt. Fifteen of the 63 cattle in the trailer pot died on impact. Several other cattle were injured. Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, Sergeant Wayne Connell, says the truck driver did not see the train. Hunt says the crossing is marked by static crossing signs and controlled by stop signs. The Union Pacific Centennial Passenger Train was carrying staff and executives on a tour of the region. Local ranchers and volunteers rigged a ramp to unload the cattle of the truck, using a hale bale as a guide. The other cattle will be destroyed.
