Description

It has been my tradition to walk in the Labour Day parade with my friend and fellow ACTRA member, Tim B. As many do, we continue into the X (CNE) and have Fish and Chips and enjoy the bright chaos of the last day of the X. This is the second year I filmed the parade, and the first year I did a video for it! I thought I'd have some fun and used clips from our post-parade CNE wanderings as well. This was a particularly important weekend. This year, as the attacks on Labour increased, more people seemed to realize the importance of unions as seen by the fight for unionization with the Halifax coffee barristas in Canada and the wonderful fightback in the US fast food sector. And here in Canada, two unions, CAW and CEP joined to create the huge, potentially transformational, UNIFOR. Labour Day Weekend, they had their first conference in Toronto and a wonderful free concert (UNIFEST) at Nathan Phillips Square before leading the Labour Day parade. . I shot footage of the conference and Unifest and included bits in the Labour Day Video. I also included footage from past rallies (elevator workers and Porter etc)... and they're sepia'd and framed in red. I wrote, sang and recorded a song for this, called UP OR DOWN. It was originally written about the strike of the elevator workers (IUEC), but the day I started recording it, the strike was settled (yeah!). I changed it to reflect more generally the assault on unions. I will post that version - both spoken and sung - later. THIS version was created specifically for Labour Day - the 2nd verse was replaced by a bridge, taken from union slogans this year - particularly the Steelworkers' banner. UP OR DOWN (Labour Day Version) CHORUS Which way do you want to go Up or down? Which way do you want to go Up or down? The Big Biz-Government cartel They ain't got no shame Slash safety and security In a race to the bottom game. VERSE Billions aren't enough, bosses want more They force us to strike and what for? Greed, yeah greed. Their profits, perks and pay soar sky high As they bleed our rights and pay dry Greed, yeah greed They upload profits and download costs So benefits and full-time jobs are lost We're cut, made part-time or contract You're looking' at your future, unless you wake up and act! So... [Chorus] BRIDGE Workers have rights Unions defend them Communities have needs Unions voice them Together, we are stronger! [Chorus] GEAR/SOFTWARE Will flesh this out later, but Cubase 7, Wavelab Elements 8, Sony Vegas Platinum 12, and Big Fish Audio/Dieguis Productions. All legally purchased (bit of an owie, but well worth it!) :-)
