Description

A four metre tall bronze statue of Marvel Comic's fictional superhero Captain America was unveiled in New York's Prospect Park on Wednesday. The statue will stand in the park temporarily to mark the 75th anniversary of the creation of the legendary character. Despite rain, large crowds of fans, some dressed as characters from the comics, turned up to see the unveiling ceremony. The national anthem was sung and a military colour guard paraded before Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams welcomed the statue with a speech describing why Captain America has been such a longstanding New York hero. The statue features a line from the "Captain America: The First Avenger" film, "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn." Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941, Captain America was designed as a patriotic super soldier who often fought the Axis powers of World War II. His costume bears the American flag motif and he is armed with an indestructible shield made from the fictional metal Vibranium, taken from the fictional African country of Wakanda.
