Road to Rio 2016: Rayton Okwiri bags Olympics ticket

Rayton Okwiri is the first Kenyan to secure qualification to the Rio 2016 Olympics. The welter-weight boxer from the Prisons Boxing Club bagged his Rio ticket after defeating Russian boxer, Andrey Zamkovoy in the third and last phase of the AIBA pre-ranking rounds in Baku, Azerbaijan to reach the final. Two finalists in each of the event’s 10 weight categories qualifies for the Olympics. Okwiri missed the 2012 London Olympic games where bantamweight Benson Gicharu was Kenya’s sole male representative. Gicharu is also taking part in the Aiba Pro-Boxing. His next bout is scheduled for January 15th in Paris, France.
