Description

The Gabriel project is a typical "out-of-the-box" project that envisions innovative solutions to overcome some of the present limitations of the European air transportation system. One of the ideas that came from the Out of the Box project was to launch and recover aircraft by using ground-based power. After the preliminary analysis of several methods of using ground-based power to enable aircraft take-off and landing (e.g. microwave technology), the GABRIEL proposal was focused on a system using magnetic levitation technology. This unique solution is envisioned to reduce aircraft fuel consumption since aircraft weight could be reduced as possibly no undercarriage might be needed, less fuel would be needed to carry on-board and engines could be smaller as less thrust could be needed. Using ground power could also reduce CO2 and NOx emissions at airports whilst noise levels could be substantially reduced since only airframe noise will be produced during take-off. Airport capacity could be also increased by introducing multiple launch and recovery ramps thus alleviating the problem of limited runway capacity in Europe. www.gabriel-project.eu
