Russia Attempts Persian Leopard Reintroduction

Description

The endangered Persian leopard is being reintroduced to the Russian Sochi region after almost a century. Vital migration routes the animal needs to thrive, however, are under threat from expanding ski resorts. Conservationists will release two three-year-old animals within the next few weeks. This will be followed by another pair later this year. Officials hope a leopard colony will again take root in the southeastern corner of Europe and spread eastward. Long before the city of Sochi was founded in the 1800s, the Persian leopard — also known as the Caucasian leopard — had lived in the Caucasus region. A campaign to eradicate the unpopular wolf using traps and poisoned meat indiscriminately killed all predators. Today, there are fewer than 400 Persian leopards in the wild. The only sustainable wild populations are in Iran and Turkmenistan. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/russia-trying-bring-back-leopard-species-it-last-saw-100-n580796 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
