Description

The creation of Black History Month began in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History proclaimed the second week of February to be "Negro History Week". The holiday was created in hopes that Black history would be one day be integrated into American history. With growing popularity, the holiday was federally endorsed and later expanded to Black History Month in 1976; after recognizing the celebration of Black History Month at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. During this time President Gerald Ford stated, "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Over the past few weeks Elliot James and the Gay Report LA news team met with a few leaders in the community to not only discuss Black History but the history of the Black LGBT community here in Los Angeles.
