Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) - Seychelles Outer Islands

SOURCE

Description

Every year the tuna purse seine fishing fleet opperating in the Western Indian Ocean deploys thousands of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs). Despite sophisticated tracking systems these floating rafts, which are designed to attract fish, can become lost. The FAD continues to drift with ocean currents until it comes into contact with land. In the last 5 years these devices have been encountered with increasing regulatrity by ICS staff working on Seychelles islands. They pose a significant danger to the fragile ecosystems that exist on these remote tropical islands. ICS is working to clean up this problem, and suggest changes to fishing practices that would prevent further damage.
