The project appears to give Morrison Carte Blanche with his vision of the alternate realities that make up the new DCU. In their SDCC press release they mentioned a few specifics but left the door open to new possibilities by saying ‘whether it’s the further adventures of Earth-4’s PAX AMERICANA, the New Reichsmen of Earth-10, the female-led Justice Guild of Earth-11 or even one of the seven “unknown worlds,” everything is fair game!’ We will have to wait and see how far the rabbit hole he goes and how short a leash DC gives him. Or if he mixes metaphors. One of the books getting a surprising number of great reviews is IDW’s Godzilla in Hell. The miniseries is proving to be a remarkably well crafted existential tale that follows the King of Monsters as he faces his greatest challenges of introspection and self discovery through the Dante-esque spheres of Hell itself. Strange concept, sure? Assigning too much complex thought to a city-smashing kaiju? Not as much as you’d think. The book is mostly dialogue free and does a great job of showing Godzilla as a sympathetic, anthropomorphic creature without projecting too much of the audience, thus humanizing him. He remains a fearsome force of nature and warning of man’s hubris while taking the reader on a dark path down what it is to be such a creature. I suggest it highly. And in sad news, old school comic artist and writer Alan Kupperberg, who worked for both DC and Marvel in the 60’s and 70’s, has passed away. While not a household name, he was well respected in the industry. He was most well known for his work on Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, the Savage Sword of Conan, Amazing Spiderman, the Comic strip versions of Howard the Duck, Hulk and Little Orphan Annie. Kupperberg died this week of cancer at the age of 62.
