Description

The Golden Circle Tour is a popular 200-mile day trip out of Reykjavik, Iceland. Tours vary slightly in their stops, but all routinely include Thingvellir, the geysers of Haukadalur and Gullfoss. My particular tour also included stops at Nesjavellir geothermal power plant, the Kerith volcano crater, Skaholt church, Hellisheidarvirkjun geothermal power plant and a greenhouse at Hveragerthi. The Photos (in order) E03A0974 - Thingvellir National Park straddles the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates; the rift valley is the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the longest mountain range in the world E03A0983 - The Icelandic Althing, or parliament, was established at Thingvellir in 930AD, the oldest parliament in the world; the spot is marked with the Icelandic flag in Almannagja, or Everyman's Gorge, one of the rifts in the rift valley E03A0986 - Thingvellir Church is located on the European side of Thingvellir E03A0993 - The Great Geysir was the first geyser reported to mainland Europeans E03A0995 - Nearby, the Strokkur geyser erupts several times an hour E03A1009 - Gullfoss, or Golden Falls, along the Hvita River E03A1017 - Another view of Gullfoss E03A1033 - This fellow greeted visitors at the Garden of Eden in Hveragerthi; Iceland is rich in geothermal resources, which helps to create this tropical paradise just below the Arctic Circle
