Song: "Every Other Weekend" Artist: Reba McEntire & Kenny Chesney "Abby! Jake! Its three-thirty!" Miley yelled something simple over her shoulder. Every other weekend, these words fell from her lips, and every other weekend she wanted nothing more than to choke them back. With her converse-covered foot resting on the SUV behind her, she leant back, the stress of a Friday night already setting in. She let her head roll back, resting on the cold maroon metal of the opened car door. "Abb-" "What?!" The thirteen year old bit back, throwing her duffel bag in the front seat before climbing in. "Im right here, jeez!" "Abigail, I dont appreciate that tone!" Miley tried to remedy the situation but quickly gave up. It wasnt Abbys fault that her parents were separated. It wasnt Abbys responsibility to understand why they couldnt be together. It wasnt Abbys job to feel bad for her mother who would now be alone for the next week. Similarly, Jake was in the dark. He was five when his parents had separated, and now five years later, the divorce papers were being signed and all of this back and forth driving every other weekend would now become permanent. It wasnt the way it used to be. Now Abby and Jake knew to come home on Fridays and pack a bag after school. They knew better than to leave things behind, and they had a better recollection of what clothes were at which house and the way each parent did certain things. Their minds were moldable, and forgiving. If only their parents were. "Is everybody in?" Miley asked as Jake climbed into the backseat and shut the door. Abby and Jake grumbled, sitting back in their seats to endure the fifteen minute ride ahead of them. "Okay" Miley whispered knowing it was only her who would hear her words. Silently, she buckled her seatbelt and pulled out of the driveway. Somehow, each minute slipped by as Miley tried to savor the moments spent bitterly with her children. It was like this sometimes. "Its just part of the process", her mother always tried to tell her. "Sometimes you love someone and it doesnt work out. You and Nick tried, right? Dont force it for the kids, Mi...they dont deserve that" Miley wanted to nod, almost as if a slight tilt of the head would make it all okay. But it wasnt and it never would be. Miley was absolutely in love with the same man that she was divorcing and she had no idea how to tell him. She wasnt even sure if this entire thing was repairable. Maybe her mother was right. They tried. Maybe there was nothing left to do. ~!~ Nick stood, the way he always seemed to at the beginning of the weekend. He was weak and haggard, with heavy purple bags underneath his eyes. His weeks were spent hidden away in recording studios, his fingers tirelessly pressing buttons and adjusting keys to make a song or lyric perfect. He dedicated his life to someone elses song and had somehow forgotten about his own. Now, he was about to see his kids, for the first time in a week. He was happy mostly because he had to be. This was supposed to be one of his better days, as his mother called them. Every other weekend brought him a house of laughter and warm food, contrasting his usual surroundings. He could see Miley, and shed smile the way she used to when they were younger. Hed smile back as feelings rushed back through his veins. His heart would race and her breath would quicken. Then shed break the silence, kiss the kids, whisper goodbye, and drive away. She was always good at running away. Nick looked down, his converse-covered feet kicking at the gravel below. His hands found solace in the depths of his jea...
