Description

What do Glenn Miller, Lawrence Welk, Bing Crosby, Spike Jones and Benny Goodman have in common with Canadian songstress Jill Barber? Well, until the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame called Barber, very little. But now there is a tie that binds these musicians together: the song "When My Baby Smiles at Me". Barber is the latest in a long line of artists that have covered this rag-time era Canadian song that got its start in 1919 by Montreal pianist Billy Munro when his band The Kentucky Serenaders orchestra performed the song in New York. Later that year Ted Lewis, the leader of the Ted Lewis Orchestra, adapted the song and recorded a version that reached the #1 chart position in the US in 1920. Since then hundreds of versions of the song have been recorded and it has become a standard. Barber's version of the song incorporates two of the many unique styles heard in other covers. Barber begins with a slow and sultry first half and moves to a bouncy and upbeat second half. It is a rendition that highlights the best styles of an era. Check out Jill Barber performing this month's Covered Classic "When My Baby Smiles at Me" as a tribute to the song's induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
