Description

The Mount Bosiu national heritage site marks the beginnings of the Basotho Nation. A recently built visitor center in the heart of Southern Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains informs local and international visitors about this important part of Lesotho’s history. Whilst offering a variety of mountain trails to visitors, the monument site comprises of a small exhibition area with an iconic interactive mountain exhibit designed by Formula D. Focal point of the installation is a large horizontal projection, which is mapped onto a 3D scale model of the mountain. 3 tablet computers are permanently installed around the model providing 3 individual apps, each of which is tailored for a specific story of the site. The tablet apps are connected to a local server which in turn controls the central model projection. This way, visitors can use the apps to display content on the central projection, such as location markers for trails and heritage sites. Up to 3 visitors can use the interface simultaneously. Legend has it that Mount Bosiu grows at night, an optical illusion caused by shadows. This is beautifully illustrated by one of the feature animations projected onto the model. The Interactive Mount Bosiu exhibit effectively demonstrates how multi-device interaction can add value to museum experiences and other public environments. With content being distributed strategically amongst several networked devices and displays, the exhibit draws on spatial orientation and 3D objects to create an enjoyable and engaging user experience.
