Description

In a singer-songwriter style, famous Saharawi singer and guitarist Ali Seidah sings about one of the most well known and loved Saharawi leaders, El Jalil Sidi Mohamed. El Jalil was one of the first to join, in 1974, the Saharawi liberation movement, the Polisario Front, and, in 1976, the war against Morocco, who had occupied the Saharawi homeland Western Sahara in 1975, forcing half of its population to become refugees in SW Algeria. The song, first performed when ElJalil died in 2013, pays homage to his sacrifice for the Saharawi cause and encourages others to follow his example. This recording was made in the youth centre of Ausserd, in the Saharawi refugee camps, as part of the British Library's field recordings project 'Portraits of Saharawi music', which I have been leading since October 2013.
