Description

In this third special programme from Brazil, HARDtalk is in Rio de Janeiro - a city preparing itself for global scrutiny as the country readies itself for the kick-off of the World Cup this summer. Billions of dollars have been spent on new football arenas, transport links, and infrastructure. But Brazil remains a country disfigured by ingrained urban poverty. Here in Rio many people live in shanty towns -- or favelas -- just a short bus ride from the glamour of Copacabana beach and the grandeur of the rebuilt Maracana stadium. Stephen Sackur talks to a film-maker whose hugely successful movies have presented an unflinching portrayal of the violence and corruption within the favelas. Jose Padilha says he wants to end the invisibility of the urban poor - is it a message Brazilians want to hear?
