Description

WD9EWK working the AO-7 satellite from the American Radio Relay League's 2014 National Centennial Convention in Hartford, Connecticut (grid FN31ps) on 19 July 2014 at 2021 UTC (1621 EDT). This was the first of two demonstrations working satellites given at the convention on 19 July, which came after another AO-7 demonstration on 17 July and an SO-50 demonstration on 18 July. The WD9EWK station was located on the plaza outside the convention site, the Connecticut Convention Center in the center of Hartford. Three stations were worked during this pass - PV8DX in Brazil, AA1UE in Massachusetts, and N5JF in Louisiana - before the satellite switched from mode B (transmit on 70cm, receive on 2m) to mode A (transmit on 2m, receive on 10m). WD9EWK used a pair of Yaesu FT-817ND transceivers, transmitting at 5W into an Elk Antennas handheld 2m/70cm log periodic. Audio was fed into an external speaker and a Sony digital audio recorder. Video was recorded by Peter Portanova W2JV (ex-WB2OQQ) with my Sony DSC-HX10V digital camera in 720p. Thanks for that, and for providing the small table used for the radios during the demonstration!
