Description

We are pleased to announce that Science and Wellness, in collaboration with Student Activities, will launch a series of science seminars at South Campus.   The seminars will be geared toward freshman-level college students and will attempt to relate science to issues that matter to students. Seminars will be offered monthly and will be held in the PCAT (Performing Cultural Arts Theatre).   “Deep Sea Mysteries: Monster Larva and the Evolution of Bioluminescence”   Dr. Heather Bracken-Grissom, Florida International University, Dr. Bracken-Grissom will discuss her research on bioluminescent (glowing) organisms in the deep sea. Summary The ocean represents a mysterious realm ripe with novel life forms and undiscovered biodiversity.   The organisms found in mid-water and deep-sea communities continue to amaze the scientific and public audience.  Originally described as a “monstrous and misshapen animal,” the bizarre planktonic larva, Cerataspis monstrosa, has remained unassigned to an adult counterpart despite nearly two centuries of marine research.  Our research solves a mystery that has puzzled ocean scientists for over 184 years of marine larval research. We demonstrate the utility of DNA evidence in cases where larval rearing protocols do not succeed due to the organism’s rarity in nature and relative inaccessibility of its changing habitats over the course of ontogeny.   In the deep sea, where sunlight cannot penetrate, bioluminescence is an essential survival tool. Over 700 genera contain bioluminescent species, 80% of which are marine and depend on the generation of light for communication, feeding and defense.  Decapods—including crabs, shrimps, and lobsters—include a variety of bioluminescent organisms. In my lab we are tracing the evolution of bioluminescence in deep sea shrimp and identifying visual pigments and genes involved in detecting the bioluminescent signal.  These findings will enhance our understanding of bioluminescence even in the absence of fully understanding life histories and behaviors of the group.   #BCSouth #BrowardSouth #BrowardCollegeSouth #BCSC diverse, professional, student friendly, Pembroke Pines, FL
