One of the greatest American writers, Samuel Longhorne Clemens, aka Mark Twain. It's really a shame he's mostly remembered for Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and such, which are themselves great pieces of writing, but his legacy stretches far beyond that. Lots of religious and political satires.
