Description

THE YEAR 1939 IS WIDELY KNOWN AS THE GREATEST YEAR IN FILM, BUT THERE WERE OTHER YEARS THAT WERE GREAT ALSO. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THE CASE FOR THE YEAR 1976, IT WAS THE YEAR THAT SAW RELEASES FROM SUCH ACCLAIMED DIRECTORS AS MARTIN SCORSESE, SYDNEY LUMET, ELIA KAZAN, JOHN CASSAVETES, JOHN CARPENTER, WIM WENDERS, WERNER HERZOG, FREDRICO FELLINI, BRIAN DE PALMA, LINA WERTMULLER, ROMAN POLANSKI, MEL BROOKS, HAL ASHBY, BLAKE EDWARDS, PAUL MAZURSKY, BOB RAFELSON, ALAN J PAKULA, ROBERT ALTMAN, DON SIEGEL, ARTUR HILLER, DAVID LYNCH, MICHAEL RITCHIE, CLINT EASTWOOD, INGMAR BERGMAN, BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI, PETER BOGDANOVICH, JOHN SCHLESINGER, FRANCOIS TRUFFUAT, DEREK JARMAN, NICHOLAS ROEG, ARTHUR PENN, ALAN RUDOLPH, AND THE VERY LAST FILM FROM ALFRED HITCHCOCK, IT WAS ALSO THE YEAR THAT JOHN WAYNE STARRED IN HIS LAST FILM. WE WERE ASKED TO GET UP AND SCREAM "I AM AS MAD AS HELL, AND I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!", AND ROBERT DE NIRO ASKED 'ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?"..WE WERE INTRODUCED TO ROCKY BALBOA, DAMIEN THORNE, HOWARD BEALE, THE BEALES OF "GREY GARDENS", TRAVIS BICKLE, CARRIE WHITE, LIONEL TWAIN, MORRIS BUTTERMAKER, AND "DEEP THROAT". EVEN THE BAD FILMS WERE MORE INTERESTING THEN MOST OF THE STUFF PUT OUT TODAY, AND CHANCES WERE TAKEN, NO MAINSTREAM MOVIE TODAY WOULD BE MADE TODAY ABOUT WOODY GUTHRIE, OR A MUSICAL USING KIDS AS GANGSTERS, OR A SILENT MOVIE, EVEN "ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN' WOULD HAVE ENDED UP ON CABLE NOT THE MULTIPLEX, SO ALL IN ALL I BELIEVE 1976 TO BE A PRETTY GREAT YEAR IN CINEMA..... SO WHAT IS YOURS?... SONG IS " A FIFTH OF BEETHOVEN" A HUGE HIT FOR WALTER MURPHY IN 1976..............THIS VIDEO IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY UNDER THE FAIR USE ACT.
