Description

Goni made landfall in Kumamoto prefecture and moved across Kyushu island before reaching the Sea of Japan. It was about 90 kilometers offshore, northwest of Hagi in Yamaguchi prefecture, as of 2 p.m. The typhoon was packing maximum wind speeds of 180 kilometers (111 miles) an hour and traveling north at about 25 kilometers an hour, according to the agency. Kyushu Electric Power Co. said Goni had caused power outages in 340,000 houses across Kyushu island as of 2 p.m. Kyushu Railway Co. halted all bullet trains Tuesday morning but resumed services at 3 p.m. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said there were 26 reports of injuries in Kyushu and Okinawa as of 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.
