Description

A Syrian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Speaking after the meeting on Wednesday, Muallem said his talks with the Russian president were productive. He said Putin confirmed Moscow’s determination to expand ties with the Syrian President Bashar Assad. Muallem has also held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov who says his country supports a UN proposal for local ceasefires in Syria. Muallem is on a two-day visit to Russia for talks with the country’s top officials, which are said to be mainly about the issue of mending the political process in Syria. A senior Syrian official had previously hinted that the two sides were expected to discuss a possible restart of peace talks between Damascus and the opposition. Two previous rounds of Syria peace negotiations in Switzerland ended in failure.
