This session was recorded during Pittcon 2013 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Monday, March 18, 2013. TITLE: Classification of LC Chiral Stationary Phases - A Quarter of a Century on AUTHOR: William J Lough - University of Sunderland ABSTRACT OVERVIEW: Irrespective of the many scientific achievements of Irving W Wainer, he is perhaps best known for his Type I - V classification of chiral stationary phases (CSP)for HPLC which was based on the nature of the interaction between the analyte and the CSP. This classification was first expounded in a review article in the journal Trends in Analytical Chemistry and later developed into a guide published by the column vendor J.T. Baker. In this presentation the Wainer classification will be evaluated in the context of its validity, usefulness, impact at the time of publication and enduring impact. More importantly, consideration will be given to whether, a quarter of a century of new developments in CSP on, it still have relevance today. Possible alternative classifications that may now be more appropriate will be discussed and indeed, in the context of modern approaches to chiral LC method development and the types of column that are most frequently successful it will be pertinent to address the point that it not even now be necessary to have a classification of CSP at all.
