Description

For the Orson Welles centenary, an excerpt from his unfinished drama, "The Other Side of the Wind." Clips from the in-progress film shoot were presented at the American Film Institute's 1975 tribute to Welles (and were later featured in the documentary "Orson Welles: One Man Band"). The film concerns a famed Hollywood director (played by John Huston) who is surrounded by fans, acolytes and critics at his 70th birthday celebration. In the scene presented here, Welles gave his extras 16mm and 8mm cameras to photograph the protagonist's interactions, subsequently creating a kaleidoscopic vision using different points of view (and varying film gauges). In addition to Huston as J.J. Hannaford, the clips feature Peter Jason as Marvin P. Fassbender; Peter Bogdanovich as Brooks Otterlake; and Susan Strasberg as a film critic inspired by Pauline Kael (who had just published a New Yorker article questioning Welles' authorship of "Citizen Kane").
