Both staff and students were participating in a pro-Morsi sit-in organised by the Muslim Brotherhood outside the Republican Guard HQ when, according to witnesses, they were shot at by security forces. The Egyptian ministry of health released a statement saying that a total of 51 pro-Morsi supporters were killed at the sit-in on Monday. The protesters were demanding the reinstatement of former president Mohamed Morsi after he was ousted by the army last Wednesday. Al-Azhar University has been teaching the fundamentals of Islam since the 970s and is considered the centre of Islamic and Arabic learning worldwide. Its mosque also holds huge religious importance for Sunnis, which make up the majority of the world's Muslims.
