Original song by Adele New lyrics by Felicia Sloin (www.facebook.com/fsloin) Videography and painting by TomKnight.com According to the Passover story, Batya was the daughter of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. She was also the foster mother of Moses, having drawn him from the Nile River and bestowed upon him his name. It wasn't until I became a mother myself that I started to think about the story differently than I had growing up. When I was a kid it always about fanfare. Moses versus Pharaoh. Burning bushes. Plagues. Blood, guts, gore, and parting seas. As a mother, my perspective on the story has shifted, as if seeing it through a new lens. I think about the pain of Yocheved- Moses's birth mother who had to give up her son to save his life. And I think about Batya- who was always glossed over in the telling of the story when I was a kid. As a mother, I found myself speculating about what might compel an Egyptian princess- someone of wealth and privilege- to rescue and raise a baby born of Hebrew slaves? The very people her father was trying to annihilate? So when you take my musings and mix them with an amazing, heart-wrenching song like "Rolling in the Deep"- this is what comes out. Enjoy and Happy Passover!
