The first step in tapping is identifying a maple or box elder tree. It's a bit tricky in winter, without the leaves, but we show you how to identify opposite branching and some bark characteristics. All maple trees can be tapped, including the sugar, silver, red, black, Big Leaf, crimson, mountain, rock and even the box elder tree.
