The New-York Historical Society and NYC Media, the official network of the City of New York, have partnered to produce a special series of one minute videos that feature the staff of the New York Historical Society as they answer some of the most captivating questions ever posed to them about the City's fascinating and unique history. What building previously stood on the site of the Empire State Building? Two separate hotels stood on the site, the Waldorf and the Astoria, constructed in the 1890s for William Waldorf Astor and John Jacob Astor IV. These two cousins, nursing a feud, built on the sites of their parents' mansions, including that of "The" Mrs. Astor. Soon joined as one, the Waldorf-Astoria moved uptown in 1931 to make room for the Empire State Building.
