Description

The vaccine must be administered by intra-muscular injection into the thigh muscle. On occasions, the badgers may require restraining by using the restraining wickets. This allows the badger to be held in position to administer the vaccine efficiently and quickly through the mesh. Immediately after vaccinating each badger, the syringe, needle and cap must be deposited in a sharps biohazard container. Once vaccinated and before the badger is released, they are temporarily marked. A small area of guard hairs are clipped with curved scissors and the same area is sprayed with stock marker spray. This ensures that the badger is readily identifiable in the event of a re-capture in the same trapping session. Once the badger has been vaccinated, marked and deemed fit for release, the trap door is opened and the badger is released back to its environment.
