The world is ecstatic about the 2012 Olympics games, but no one seems to report on the mass evictions, increasing number of criminals, or the largest mobilization of the military troops in the UK since the end of WWII. A week from Friday the world's gaze will fall upon London, where 15,000 performers will be dancing and singing slightly out of time in a bizarre, multi-million-dollar pantomime that will commence Britain's hosting of the Olympics. It will rain, traffic will grind to a halt, and there will be huge lines staffed by soldiers who are more used to searching for IEDs than rummaging through purses and bookbags. But everyone will grin and bear it, newspapers will effuse about the "old, wartime spirit of the East End" and the Olympics will be grudgingly declared a success. To celebrate all of this, we made a film about London's preparation for the Games. As well as hearing about the fleets of alien ships that will appear in the skies above East London over the next two weeks, we met local residents who have been evicted to make room for the Olympics, criminals who will be stealing from the crowds of tourists this summer, and eccentrics like Tom Clare, who will be performing the Morris Dance all the way to London.
