FOUR REAL QUEENS LAND AT FAIRMONT THE QUEEN ELIZABETH The downtown hotel adds four beehives to its rooftop garden On May 15, 2012, at dusk, four Queens and their worker bees took up residency in their royal pied-à-terre on the hotel's rooftop, a stone's throw away from the Chef's vegetable garden. Once established, the four beehives should host some 200,000 honeybees and produce three harvests per year for a total of 450 lbs of non pasteurized urban honey. Already committed to urban agriculture and a partner of the Montréal Community Sustainable Development Plan, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth took on this project to raise awareness and support the honeybee population which has seen a dangerous decline in recent years. A natural extension of the hotel's organic garden, the apiary will help to pollinate downtown Montreal's gardens and Mount Royal. Three employees of the Food & Beverage department have received formal training by local expert beekeepers from Château de Cyr outside Montreal who have developed a "superbee", best equipped for our harsh weather conditions. Unofficially called "apis mellifera Quebeca", it features a combination of the best genes from the Italian bee "apis mellifera ligustica", the German black bee "apis mellifera mellifera" and the "Buck Fast" from Norway. FAIRMONT LE REINE ELIZABETH A LA PIQURE DES ABEILLES L'hôtel installe quatre ruches sur son toit-jardin Le 15 mai 2012, à la tombée de la nuit, quatre reines et leurs ouvrières ont élu domicile sur le toit de l'hôtel Fairmont Le Reine Elizabeth, à deux pas du jardin potager du Chef. A maturité, cette colonie devrait compter plus de 200 000 abeilles mellifères et produire trois récoltes totalisant annuellement quelque 200 kilos de miel urbain non pasteurisé. Déjà engagé dans l'agriculture urbaine et partenaire du Plan de développement durable de la collectivité montréalaise, Fairmont Le Reine Elizabeth espère contribuer de façon concrète aux initiatives d'apiculture urbaine et sensibiliser sa clientèle à la situation critique du déclin des populations d'abeilles. Trois employés de la cuisine et du service de restauration de l'hôtel ont suivi une formation théorique et pratique auprès des apiculteurs professionnels Marie-Eve Cyr et Steve Martineau de Château de Cyr. Les reines choisies par ces experts pour les ruches de l'hôtel proviennent d'une souche résistante aux maladies et aux conditions climatiques du Québec. Surnommée affectueusement «Apis mellifera Quebeca », cette super-abeille est le résultat de croisements rassemblant les meilleurs gènes de l'abeille italienne « Apis mellifera ligustica », de l'abeille noire d'Allemagne « Apis mellifera mellifera » et de la « Buckfast » de Norvège.
