Turkey boosts military presence on Syrian border

4y ago

Turkey has sent anti-aircraft guns and trucks carrying rocket launchers to the Syrian border, amid an escalation of tensions with its southern neighbor. Turkish officials have confirmed that anti-aircraft batteries are being set up in the Hatay province. The Turkish leadership has promised "decisive steps" in response to Syria's shooting down last week of a Turkish fighter jet. Syria claims the jet violated its airspace, while Turkey says it was shot down over international waters. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned earlier this week that any Syrian military units seen approaching the border will be considered a direct threat. The Turkish government and military chiefs will be holding a National Security Council meeting later today to discuss the standoff with Syria.
