Description

Produced by http://abcofilm.com/ for http://tuliptv.com/. This episode was first broadcast on June 2, 2012. Have you ever looked behind the scenes of harness racing? We visit Langley's Fraser Downs race track and talk with manager Joe Gray and up-and-coming driver Amber Lancaster. In the venue's restaurant, we meat the Netherlands Association "Je Maintiendrai". Board member Edie Bijdemast and Secretary Ineke Kalwij tell TulipTV what the Dutch club is all about. Traditionally, the winners of Princess Christina Contest, a Dutch organization that supports young musicians, visit Vancouver on their North American Tour. Have a look at their beautiful performance this year: the performers were Laurens de Man, piano; Annemiek de Bruin, clarinet and Ferdinand Binnendijk, mandoline. We muse about the origins of the Netherlands' embracing of the colour orange and discover close ties to the royal house of Oranje-Nassau. TulipTV producer Mass Abedi had the trip of a lifetime when visiting the Calgary Stampede Ranch. As Tourism Sales Manager Lindsay Jardine explains, the Calgary Stampede purchased its ranch in 1961 in an effort to guarantee the production of bucking stock and improve its quality with a carefully managed "Born to Buck" breeding program. In 1961, Stampede Executive and Committee agreed that 50 mares would be the foundation of the Stampede breeding program. Today, there are more than 400 horses living at the ranch, including 62 brood mares. Of the herd, only 165 are actually called on to perform in the arena and the busiest of those, maybe 30 of them - might be away from home for a total of 30 days a year. The most any of the horses will be asked to buck is about 15 times. That works out to 120 seconds (or two minutes) of labour per year. In return, these horses are fed oats and hay in addition to free-range grass, plus each gets its feet trimmed and hair done before each trip to town and they have free medical care.
