Since her arrival to Slovakia in 2005 Illah van Oijen deals with the reality of people dashed by socialism. As a photographer and activist with patience and unconditional love she tries to improve the condition of public space in Slovak cities. In her talk she describes her journey to organizing Dobrý Trh/Good Market - a community project in the streets of Bratislava. With her project Human Landscapes, which resulted in the books Bratislava, mesto na mieru (2007) and Kosice, Dzivost v srdci (2011), her goal is to map and comment the current state of the public space in Slovakia's cities. The topic of public space is also taken upon in different aspects of her work. With her projects Beat the Billboard, she puts herself in the position of an activist. She is one of the co-organizers of Dobry Trh organized by o.z. Punkt. About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
