Description
A suicide car bombing and an attack by Taliban militants on a compound housing foreigners have killed at least 7 people in Afghanistan's capital Kabul. The incidents early on Wednesday came hours after US President Barack Obama ended a surprise visit to the country. Obama had given a televised speech from the US military's Bagram Air Base near Kabul. The Taliban called the attack a response to the visit.Explosions including the suicide bombing occurred near the compound housing hundreds of international contractors. The Afghan Interior Ministry says the blast injured 17 people, including children on their way to school. Around the time of the bombing, shooting between gunmen and security forces continued for 1 hour. All the gunmen were reportedly killed.Last month, Taliban fighters launched coordinated attacks in Kabul and 3 eastern provinces. A spokesman for the group said the attacks had been planned for 2 months. He called the acts retaliation for US troops' burning of the Koran and urinating on corpses of Taliban members, as well as a shooting rampage by US soldiers.
