Lake Neuchâtel (French: Lac de Neuchâtel; German: Neuenburgersee), at a surface area of 217.9 km2, is the largest lake that is completely on Swiss territory. It stretches across the four cantons of Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Vaud, and Bern. Its feeding rivers are the Areuse, the Thielle (German: Zihl), the Canal de la Broye from Lake Murten (French: Lac de Morat), and the Mentue. Its outlet (Canal de la Thielle/German: Zihlkanal) flows into Lake Biel-Bienne (French: Lac de Bienne, German: Bielersee). Together with Lake Murten, the lake serves as equalizing reservoir for the river Aar, which joins Lake Biel-Bienne. When Lake Biel-Bienne is dammed up, the Canal de la Broye and the Canal de la Thielle flow backwards. Lake Neuchâtel is 38.3 km long and more than 8 km wide in its widest section. Its maximum depth is 152 m. Neuchâtel lies on its northern shore; in the northeast, the Fanel nature reserve; and on the southern shore, the medieval town of Estavayer-le-Lac. Other interesting sights include the small vintner's villages and vineyards at the southern foot of the Jura. Mainly the grape varieties of Chasselas and Pinot Noir are cultivated here.
